The government has completed its evaluation of proposals from local councils seeking to acquire uninhabited islands for economic development purposes. This initiative is part of the administration’s efforts to promote self-reliance and economic growth across the Maldives’ island communities.
Minister of Cities, Local Government and Public Works, Adam Shareef, confirmed that two island councils and one atoll council have submitted proposals, in line with President Mohamed Muizzu’s policy to grant councils the ability to lease uninhabited islands for income-generating activities.
Minister Shareef stated that the evaluation of the proposals has now been completed, and the relevant reports will be submitted to the President’s office within the coming week. Final decisions on the proposals will rest with President Muizzu.
The move follows a promise made earlier this year by President Muizzu, who emphasized the government’s commitment to enhancing the autonomy of local councils. By allowing councils to acquire islands for economic ventures, the administration aims to empower island communities and reduce their dependence on external resources.
The government plans to lease the uninhabited islands to local councils for a period of 10 to 25 years. These leases will enable councils to develop the islands for various economic activities, contributing to the broader goal of making the island communities self-sufficient.
