The Maldivian government has identified five islands to participate in a new vertical farming initiative, aiming to boost local food production and promote modern farming techniques. Minister of Agriculture and Animal Welfare, Dr. Aishath Rameela, revealed the selection of the islands during an appearance on a special program aired by PSM News.
The selected islands include Kendhikulhudhoo in Noonu Atoll, Hulhudhuffaaru in Raa Atoll, Naifaru in Lhaviyani Atoll, Mathiveri in Alifu Alifu Atoll, and Kinbidhoo in Thaa Atoll. Local councils of these islands have already been informed of the government’s decision, and preparations are underway to begin the project.
Minister Rameela shared that the government is currently in the process of procuring the necessary structures for the vertical farming projects, with delivery expected in early 2025. Once the materials are received, training programs will be conducted to teach local residents vertical farming techniques, with additional technical support provided to ensure the success of the project.
Vertical farming is seen as an innovative approach to agriculture, particularly in the Maldives, where space and land are limited. The use of hydroponics and greenhouse farming, which are becoming increasingly popular across the nation, can help mitigate challenges such as plant diseases. These methods not only promote healthier crops but also reduce reliance on imports, contributing to greater food security.
The government envisions this initiative as a step forward in modernizing farming practices across the Maldives, ultimately supporting sustainability and self-sufficiency in the agricultural sector.
