The relationship between the government and local councils has significantly improved, with councils expressing greater trust and cooperation, according to Minister of Cities, Local Government, and Public Works, Adam Shareef Umar.
In a recent interview on PSM News, Minister Adam Shareef highlighted the strides made by the current administration in enhancing the decentralisation system. He noted that the establishment of a dedicated ministry for councils has played a pivotal role in improving collaboration and addressing the service needs of communities.
Over the past year, the Ministry has held discussions with more than 280 councils, while President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has personally engaged with representatives from 160 councils. These meetings have been instrumental in building trust and fostering a supportive relationship between the government and local authorities, the minister said.
Adam Shareef emphasized the administration’s commitment to ensuring the financial independence of councils, a key aspect of empowering local governance. Efforts are underway to achieve financial stability for councils, alongside infrastructure projects aimed at creating a more conducive work environment.
He also underlined the importance of the decentralisation system, noting that residents are increasingly aware of its value in promoting local development. Any changes to the system, he assured, would be made after comprehensive research and consultation. To date, 11 amendments have been introduced to the Decentralisation Act, marking the highest number of changes made to any legislation in the country.
The governmentâs focus on strengthening local governance aligns with its broader vision of fostering self-reliant communities and ensuring efficient service delivery across the Maldives.
