Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) has announced ambitious plans to develop cruise terminals at four key locations across the Maldives, a move expected to enhance the country’s growing cruise tourism sector. The initiative is part of MPL’s long-term master plan and reflects its commitment to boosting tourism infrastructure.
Speaking on a PSM News program, MPL’s Research and Development Consultant, Anil Adam, revealed that feasibility studies are underway in collaboration with a consultant from Greece. These studies aim to assess the viability of constructing cruise terminals in Uligan (Haa Alif Atoll), Fonadhoo (Laamu Atoll), Hithadhoo (Addu City), and on repurposed land in Thilafushi (Kaafu Atoll) once its commercial port is relocated.
Anil emphasized that the project will proceed after thorough consultations with industry experts and stakeholders. MPL has already signed an agreement with the Uligan Island Council, marking a significant step towards establishing the terminal in that location. Discussions are also ongoing with the Ministry of Construction and Infrastructure to ensure smooth execution of the project.
The development comes as the Maldives experiences a surge in cruise tourism, especially during peak seasons. Currently, large cruise vessels either dock near Malé City or anchor outside island lagoons, which can pose logistical challenges. The new terminals are expected to streamline these operations, providing more convenient docking facilities and enhancing the overall visitor experience.
This initiative aligns with the government’s broader vision of diversifying and decentralizing tourism, bringing economic benefits to local communities while reinforcing the Maldives’ reputation as a world-class tourist destination.
