The government has launched new guidelines aimed at fostering sustainable housing in the Maldives, a move expected to significantly benefit the construction industry. Speaking at the official launch ceremony, Minister of Construction and Infrastructure Dr. Abdullah Muthalib highlighted the guidelines’ potential to transform the sector by promoting safer and more sustainable housing practices.
Dr. Muthalib stressed the importance of constructing homes in secure locations, a critical consideration given the Maldivesâ vulnerability to climate change. “These guidelines are not just recommendations; they are essential for ensuring the safety and sustainability of our housing sector,” he said, urging all stakeholders to comply with the new framework.
Mohamed Nimaal, CEO of the Local Government Authority, echoed these sentiments, describing the guidelines as a comprehensive roadmap for sustainable housing development. He noted that with the rise in extreme weather events and escalating construction costs, the guidelines provide practical solutions to mitigate these challenges.
Developed under the Maldives Urban Development and Resilience Project, the guidelines draw from international best practices and were created through extensive research and stakeholder consultations. They offer strategies for disaster resilience, energy efficiency, and the use of eco-friendly materials.
The World Bank, which supports the project, views the guidelines as a timely intervention to address both climate and economic challenges. The publication is designed to assist not only those constructing new homes but also individuals looking to enhance the safety and sustainability of existing structures.
The government believes that by adopting these guidelines, the construction industry can contribute to a more resilient and sustainable Maldives.
