Male’ Water and Sewerage Company Private Limited (MWSC) has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Norway-based Flocean Company to investigate the feasibility of developing a subsea reverse osmosis (RO) desalination system in the Maldives. The MoU was signed by MWSC’s Managing Director, Abdul Matheen Mohamed, and Flocean’s Managing Director, Alexander Fuglesang.
During the signing event, Matheen underscored the advantages of the underwater desalination system, pointing out that it would reduce the need for land-based facilities and offer a more cost-effective solution by operating underwater. He mentioned that the study’s goal is to find the most economical and eco-friendly methods for water production in the Maldives.
Matheen also shared that the potential site for the project is located roughly 1.5 kilometers east of Hulhumale’, at a depth of about 500 meters, where the seawater is less saline. He highlighted Flocean’s extensive experience in setting up subsea desalination systems, which made them the ideal partner for this study.
MWSC further explained that the feasibility study will cover various technical aspects, such as underwater research, environmental impact assessments, and financial evaluations for the water production process. If the project is deemed viable, it could significantly improve the Maldives’ capacity for water production and storage, helping to meet the growing demand resulting from population expansion.
