Maldives Minister of Tourism Ibrahim Faisal announced ongoing efforts to secure a USD 12.79 million financial package aimed at boosting tourism in underdeveloped areas. Speaking at the recent launch event for the “Addu Tourism Brand,” Minister Faisal highlighted the unique challenges faced by these regions, including limited transportation options, financing barriers, and issues with implementing tourism-related taxes.
Minister Faisal outlined plans to facilitate financial support through selected banks at favorable interest rates, a move he believes will significantly enhance tourism infrastructure and increase bed capacity in underserved areas. By addressing these logistical and financial hurdles, the government hopes to strengthen the Maldives’ position as a global tourism hotspot and attract more visitors to emerging destinations within the country.
Beyond expanding infrastructure, the minister emphasized the importance of increasing youth participation across various tourism-related sectors, such as restaurants, laundry services, water sports, and other small businesses. This approach, he explained, not only supports the local economy but also provides valuable opportunities for young Maldivians to engage in the tourism industry.
Minister Faisal reiterated the government’s commitment to promoting local tourism in each atoll, working towards inclusive growth in all regions. The ultimate goal, he noted, is to cultivate a robust tourism ecosystem that highlights the natural beauty and unique offerings of every corner of the Maldives, thus driving increased tourist arrivals and supporting long-term industry growth.
