Maafaru International Airport has officially resumed international operations, marking a major milestone in strengthening the Maldives’ position as a premier luxury travel destination. The airport, which handles the second-highest number of private jets in the country after Velana International Airport, had temporarily halted international operations in May of the previous year to accommodate a major redevelopment project.
The recent expansion includes an extension of the runway from 2.2 kilometers to 2.8 kilometers, enabling the airport to accommodate larger aircraft and better serve international flights. In addition to the runway upgrade, Maafaru Airport is undergoing apron expansion, which will allow it to accommodate up to 26 business jets at once, doubling its previous capacity of 13 jets. This development is expected to significantly improve operational efficiency and address the rising demand for luxury travel services, particularly among high-end clientele visiting the Maldives.
The airport’s redevelopment and expansion projects were primarily financed by the Abu Dhabi Fund for Development (ADFD), which provided USD 60 million in non-reimbursable financial aid. The ADFD initially awarded this grant for the airport’s establishment and subsequently extended additional funds to support the expansion. Singaporean firm Tuff Offshore was contracted to oversee the project’s construction and development.
As Maafaru Airport reopens its doors to international flights, these upgrades are anticipated to enhance the Maldives’ connectivity and provide a premium travel experience for luxury travelers, meeting the expectations of affluent visitors and further boosting the tourism industry. This expanded capacity is also expected to improve access to nearby resorts, fostering growth and accessibility in the Noonu Atoll region.
