Vice President Hussain Mohamed Latheef has underscored the Maldives’ dedication to strengthening good governance and democratic principles at the 2024 Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM). Speaking during the event’s Executive Session, Vice President Latheef emphasized that democratic values such as human rights, peace, tolerance, and respect for diversity serve as essential pillars for building resilient societies. He highlighted that these principles are integral to reinforcing the rule of law and enhancing effective governance.
The Vice President also highlighted Maldives’ progress in solidifying its democratic foundation, pointing to four successful cycles of free and fair elections across presidential, parliamentary, and local levels as key indicators of this commitment. He expressed gratitude to the Commonwealth Secretariat for its support in election observation and proposed further strengthening this collaboration through initiatives like training election officials, developing an election cycle strategy, accelerating observation report releases, and providing technical support to implement the Commonwealth’s recommendations.
In closing, Vice President Latheef reiterated the Maldives’ commitment to working closely with the Commonwealth to continue fortifying its democratic institutions.
